Bamboo Cladding Parking Garage The Hague

The very first bamboo parking garage of the Netherlands is located in The Hague.

Earlier this year, Bamboo Import was contracted to supply all bamboo cladding for a parking garage project in The Hague. The unique design is realized by Moke Architects in collaboration with Ballast Nedam Parking.

For the first time in history bamboo poles were used for a parking garage siding in the Benelux, which makes this project more environmentally friendly, sustainable and innovative.

Bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants in the world and belongs to the grass family. Bamboo plantations can be selectively harvested on an annual basis without the need of re-planting, that's why bamboo timber is a fantastic and sustainable alternative to substitute tropical hardwoods.

Although more than 1575 of different bamboo species exist throughout the world, there is only one kind of giant bamboo that we use for construction purposes: Guadua angustifolia. Guadua bamboo is a tropical South American bamboo species which is often labeled as "vegetal steel" or "the strongest bamboo in the world".

Guadua got this reputation because its fibers present a higher tensile strength than mild steel. In order to utilize these amazing properties in European construction, we carefully selected the best Guadua bamboo poles that comply with the highest quality requirements.

The use of bamboo poles in modern European architecture is still very limited, partly because building regulations for bamboo are not yet available. The mechanical properties of bamboo are not sufficiently known in Europe, which is in contrast to many Asian and South American countries where bamboo is widely used throughout history. It is estimated that 1 billion people worldwide are currently living in houses made from bamboo.

A key feature of bamboo is that the poles are hollow. This makes bamboo a lightweight building material but also requires special joinery techniques. To facilitate the bamboo cladding installation, we developed special stainless steel clamps that were pre-assembled to the bamboo poles.

The first phase of the bamboo parking garage in The Hague consists of two floors for which we provided 2,37 km Guadua bamboo poles. In a second phase, 5 extra levels will be added that shall provide parking space for around 250 vehicles.
