How to Build a Pergola from Wood and Bamboo
With our prefab DIY kits you can easily build a pergola from wood and bamboo. The beautiful wooden pergola with bamboo joists is specially designed to support vines, roses and grapes in the bamboo roof. Once installed you can use it as a freestanding canopy in the garden or on a terrace.
|The pergola kit contains:||Tools needed:|
Lay the mitred beams on the ground so that they form a square (this is the roof of the pergola). The pre-drilled beams must face each other.
Use the 4 mm drill bit to pre-drill the corners of the roof before securing them. Drill one hole in the beam without pre-drilled holes for the bamboo sticks and drill two holes in the beam with pre-drilled holes for the bamboo sticks. Now you can secure the corner in three places with 5 x 120 mm screws without the screws sitting in each other's way.
Repeat step 2 for all the corners of the roof so that you end up with a solid square.
Put the roof upright and attach the first post. Pre-drill two holes, and secure the post to the corner of the roof with two 5 x 120 mm screws.

Repeat step 4 for attaching the second post.
Make sure that the roof is positioned perpendicular to the upright posts. Use a framing square or apply the 3-4-5 rule if you don't have a carpenter square on hand.
With the 3-4-5 rule you should measure 60 cm from the inside of the corner and draw a small line at the edge of the post. Do the same for the pre-drilled beam of the roof but at 80 cm. Now measure the diagonal distance between the two marks. The distance should be exactly 100 cm to form a perfect 90 degree angle.
Position and pre-drill the wooden braces in each corner.
Secure the wooden braces with 5 x 80 mm screws as shown in the image.
Once the braces are securely fastened, you can quarter turn the pergola in order to fasten the third post.
Secure the post and braces as described earlier.
Quarter turn the pergola once again to secure the last post.
Secure the last two braces.
Once the wooden construction of the pergola is assembled you may slide the bamboo sticks through the predrilled holes in the roof.
The bamboo canes will stick out 14,5 cm from the roof frame at both sides. Make sure the bamboo sticks are nicely aligned and secure them with 4 x 40 mm screws.
Place the pergola upright, and that's it: ready!
Optionally, you could attach post holders to the posts of the wooden pergola or dig the posts into the ground.
